Book of the Month- November 2011: The Hunger Games by Sazanne Collins
This months book of the month is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
Genre: Distopia/Action/Adventure
Released: September 14th 2008
PLOT:
In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing.
Polls are now open for our December book of the month, so get voting! And don't forget to comment on your view of this book!

Rapunzels Opinion:
Spoiler Alerts are written in purple and when the spoiler is over i have put a note in blue.
So I want to start this review by saying that I adored this book but not the series. The premise of the Hunger Games is one made up of brilliance and i adored Katniss. But the whole series? Not so much. The reason for this is both Gale and Peeta.
(*Spoiler Alert*)
I ship KatnissXGale and the fact that she ends up with Peeta just bothers me. And for so long time and so much I can not stress it enough. I would not have even minded Finnik that much just not Peeta. I mean his special talent is 'camoflage' (Scary). Anyway lets not get bogged down in that
(*Spoiler over*)
But once I put all of that aside -very hard- I was able to fully appreciate how wonderful the rest of the characters where and how much I had enjoyed the actual story line.
Katniss really was a wonderful character to have the story told from. As you would know from my previous review I like my characters strong and Katniss fit that bill while being very original. One of my favourite scenes in the book where this is really demonstrated is after the TV interview and they are 'discussing' (more like yelling) about Peeta declaring his love for Katniss. Sure she is unhappy at first but after that she manages to put her pettiness aside and look at the big picture. She never annoyed me by getting dragged down by her problems but just gave them thought and then put them aside until a later time.
(*Spoiler Alert*)
And when rue died, I was so upset (for me a real trophy to the story and how much I liked these character) and this was despite that fact that someone -names shall not be named- told me she died.
(*Spoiler over*)
When I was reading the book the whole time she was actually inside the games I spent it on the edge of my seat. I put this down to Suzanne Collins engrossing writing and the story line. I would practically anyone who likes a good book with action, a badass heroine, amazing story line and a smidge of romance.

Hunger Games Movie: New Posters and Synopsis
Here is the new synopsis for the Hunger Games movie:
And here are the new character posters for the Hunger Games movie, they all look perfect (click for hi-res image)!
Posted by Alice
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.
Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 12 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent more than 157 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

Until I Die: Cover Art and Sneak Peeks
Here is the new cover art for the upcoming book "Until I Die" by Amy Plum. It is the second in the Revenants Series and is expected to be released on May 3rd 2012.
There is no blurb yet but here are some sneak peeks:
There is no blurb yet but here are some sneak peeks:
- As Jules kissed my cheeks he whispered, “She has nothing on you, of course, Kates. It’s just that you’re so very…taken.”
- “Still in one piece?” Vincent teased, pulling me close & planting a soft kiss on my lips. “After dirty-dancing with Jules, I’m not sure.”
- “How’s your dance card look?” “Double-check your century Jules. No dance cards.” Jules shrugged & gave me his most flirtatious smile.
- A few Paris blocks away I led a completely normal life with my sister & grandparents. And here I was sword fighting with dead guys.
- “All this yummy muscleness first thing in the morning is almost too much for me to take,” she cooed, and gave him a playful wink as she scooted herself into the front seat. I shook my head. If “Flirt” qualified as a foreign language, my sister and Ambrose would both have PhDs in it.
- Gaspard eyed me cautiously. “I really can’t say,” he responded in his formal nineteenth-century style. Can’t, or won’t? I thought.
- Vincent to Kate: “The day I stop seeing you as one of the strongest people I know is the day I wake up human.”
- We stood in the graveyard, among the tombstones, forty-some dead people and me. A couple of my fellow funeral-goers had even been in their own coffins, deep under several feet of French soil.
- Kate: “Oh, please, Vincent. We’re in the middle of a major tourist site. Père Lachaise cemetary is practically Disneyland for the Dead. It’s not some Buffy soundstage with vampires rising out of the ground every time someone turns around."

"Logan Lerman has become a popular fan suggestion for the role of Simon. Just draw some glasses on this boy and he is perfect. Lerman even got a mention from our Clary–Lily Collins.
"Logan Lerman has become a popular fan suggestion for the role of Simon. Just draw some glasses on this boy and he is perfect. Lerman even got a mention from our Clary–Lily Collins.
The fans of a series like this have such a strong opinion on who they feel would be great as a character, and I feel that’s very backed up because they know the characters in and out,” Collins told Hollywood Crush in December 2010. “I trust a lot of the fans in their opinions. I’ve heard Logan Lerman thrown out for Simon. I’ve also heard about actors I may never have heard of, because they’re more on the independent side. That brings a whole other thing, because an unknown doesn’t bring in a whole lot of background. Hey, I was an unknown not too long ago and I was like, ‘Let me do it; I can prove it to you!’”"
So what are your thoughts on Logan Lerman as Simon in City of Bones??

New Book: All These Things I've Done by Gabrielle Zevin
Read the blurb of this book and thought it gave an original spin to the post apocalyptic scene so many books are placed in.
It was released on the 6th of September 2011
PLOT: In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. And yet, for Anya Balanchine, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant D.A.'s son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend. That is until her ex is accidentally poisoned by the chocolate her family manufactures and the police think she's to blame. Suddenly, Anya finds herself thrust unwillingly into the spotlight--at school, in the news, and most importantly, within her mafia family.

Snippet of a lost scene from the Clockwork series Set between the prologue and chapter one of Clockwork Angel
Set between the prologue and chapter one of Clockwork Angel.
"Jem unhitched his arms from his cane and sighed. “You know I believe we are reborn,” he said quietly. “I think if two souls are meant to be together, they will remain together on the Wheel and be together again in the life after this one.”
“Is that an official teaching or something you invented yourself?” Will asked.
Jem laughed. “Does it matter?”
Will looked at him curiously. “Do you think we will be together again?” At the change in Jem’s expression, he added, “I mean, is there a chance for me? To have another life after this, a better one?”

Yen Press Announces Manga Adaption of The Infernal Devices
NEW YORK, NY (10/14/2011) — At New York Comic Con Yen Press announced that it has entered into an agreement with #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon Cassandra Clare to create a manga adaptation of her epic The Infernal Devices trilogy with artist HyeKyung Baek.
Article:
"The Infernal Devices, a standalone trilogy set within the universe of Ms. Clare’s immensely popular The Mortal Instruments series, is the story of Tessa Gray, a sixteen-year-old American girl traveling alone to Victorian London who runs afoul of the city’s sordid supernatural underworld. Rescued by the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, Tessa quickly finds herself caught up in an intrigue that may very well destroy her new friends – including the two enigmatic young men, Jem and Will, who have taken her under their wing…
Cassandra Clare said of the deal: “As a long-time fan of manga, I’m so excited to be working on this adaptation with Yen Press. Manga has influenced a great deal of the way I envision narrative, and the chance to see my work rendered in the form is something I couldn’t pass up. I look forward to seeing HyeKyung Baek’s evocative art bring The Infernal Devices’ world of gaslit romance to life.”
Kurt Hassler, Yen Press Publishing Director, said: “I confess that I’m a sucker for Victorian Era storytelling, and I was already a fan of Cassie’s The Mortal Instruments series. The combination of the two that is The Infernal Devices had me rapt from page one, and I knew that I wanted to see this story unfold through sequential art. I cannot think of another illustrator better suited to evoking this world visually than HyeKyung Baek, and I can hardly wait to see these pages start crossing my desk!”
Chapters of The Infernal Devices will be serialized in Yen Press’s monthly online anthology magazine, Yen Plus, with publication of the first volume slated for Fall 2012.
Cassandra Clare vaulted onto the publishing scene with her first YA novel, City of Bones, and has published three other bestselling novels in The Mortal Instruments series. First published in August of 2010, Clockwork Angel marked the first installment of Cassandra’s The Infernal Devices trilogy and debuted at #1 on the New York Times list. The second book in the series is scheduled to release on December 6, 2011. Both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices have been optioned for film by Unique Features.

Iron Knight Teaser
Here is the Iron knight teaser for this week. Enjoy. This book coms out of October 25th.
I drew my sword. “Puck, get some light back there, now.”
Faery fire exploded overhead, a flash of emerald green, lighting the passageway behind us. In the flare, hundreds of shiny, eight-legged creatures scuttled back from the sudden light. The tunnel was full of them, pale and bulbous, with bodies the size of melons and multiple thin legs. But their faces, elven and beautiful, stared down at us coldly, and bared mouthfuls of curved black fangs.

New Book: On the Fringe by Courtney King Walker
This book is being released on October 15th 2011. Called 'On The Fringe' and written by Courtney Walter. I saw it in Mondie Moms and thought it looked promising.
Also the cover caught my eye. Love it.
PLOT:
Claire is struggling to overcome the murder of her childhood friend and secret crush, Daniel. Everyone else seems to be moving on with their lives, but she's still trying to cope. The fact that she finds herself alone and drowning on her 16th birthday isn't helping.
Neither is thinking she sees Daniel's face in murky water as she mysteriously resurfaces. But something happened during those four and a half minutes that will make her realize it was not just her imagination.
As Claire and Daniel try to grasp a possible reconnection, other grudge-holding beings have plans of their own. Now, the two of them have to decide if their fleeting relationship is worth the possibility of Claire being trapped on the fringe forever.
Beautifully told, On the Fringe intertwines fresh ideas about devotion, revenge, and the consequences that come with life and death

In the final version, there is more suspense surrounding Scott’s character as well as both his and Patch’s motives."

New Book: Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel (also a new title in the series)
Thought this looked like a good read. I love the idea of a Victorian/Future world. It is the first book in the "Dearly" series and is expected to be released on October the 18th 2011.
Also the next book in the series is going to be called "Dearly, Beloved"
PLOT: Love conquers all, so they say. But can Cupid’s arrow pierce the hearts of the living and the dead—or rather, the undead? Can a proper young Victorian lady find true love in the arms of a dashing zombie?
Also the next book in the series is going to be called "Dearly, Beloved"
PLOT: Love conquers all, so they say. But can Cupid’s arrow pierce the hearts of the living and the dead—or rather, the undead? Can a proper young Victorian lady find true love in the arms of a dashing zombie?
The year is 2195. The place is New Victoria—a high-tech nation modeled on the manners, mores, and fashions of an antique era. A teenager in high society, Nora Dearly is far more interested in military history and her country’s political unrest than in tea parties and debutante balls. But after her beloved parents die, Nora is left at the mercy of her domineering aunt, a social-climbing spendthrift who has squandered the family fortune and now plans to marry her niece off for money. For Nora, no fate could be more horrible—until she’s nearly kidnapped by an army of walking corpses.
But fate is just getting started with Nora. Catapulted from her world of drawing-room civility, she’s suddenly gunning down ravenous zombies alongside mysterious black-clad commandos and confronting “The Laz,” a fatal virus that raises the dead—and hell along with them. Hardly ideal circumstances. Then Nora meets Bram Griswold, a young soldier who is brave, handsome, noble . . . and dead. But as is the case with the rest of his special undead unit, luck and modern science have enabled Bram to hold on to his mind, his manners, and his body parts. And when his bond of trust with Nora turns to tenderness, there’s no turning back. Eventually, they know, the disease will win, separating the star-crossed lovers forever. But until then, beating or not, their hearts will have what they desire.
In Dearly, Departed, romance meets walking-dead thriller, spawning a madly imaginative novel of rip-roaring adventure, spine-tingling suspense, and macabre comedy that forever redefines the concept of undying love.

Pictures from the filming of the Reaping scene
Deleted scene from City of Lost Souls
"Cassie has been amazing enough to let me post this, so make sure you all give her your thanks. Although, the scene isn’t appearing in the book, a couple words have been deleted to avoid spoilers."
Clary shook her head. “There’s more to honesty than … than an arrangement of words. They say faeries can’t lie, but you lie in your intentions, your attitude, your demeanor —”
“And humans do not?” The Queen’s gaze slid across Clary and Simon. “This vampire, this Daylighter you bring everywhere with you — he is the one whose kiss you did not desire, here in my Court, is he not? Do you care for him at all, or is only the Mark of God on him that causes you to bring him with you, like a shield? And you,” she added, turning to Simon, “you who loved her, now you lend your not inconsiderable power to the project of finding the one she loves more? Where is the advantage to you?”
Simon cleared his throat. “Perhaps that is the difference between my kind and yours,” he said. “Sometimes we do things that aren’t to our advantage.”
“Ah,” said the Queen. “Stupidity, you mean.”
“I wouldn’t call it that.” Clary couldn’t help being impressed — the last time they had been here Simon had been too uncomfortable and out of his depth to say more than a few words; now he was holding his ground. “Now, do you want the ___ or not? We have business to attend to.”
“I could take it from you,” said the Queen. “The girl will not be difficult to dispose of, and as for you, Daylighter, those who serve me serve with their lives. A suicide rush could greatly inconvenience you, despite your curse.” She ran her eyes over him lingeringly.
“I am the adopted daughter of Council member Lucian Graymark,” said Clary. “I am close with the Lightwoods of the Institute. Is it worth earning their wrath and ire just to revenge yourself upon me for tricking you? Besides — I’ve always heard that faeries appreciated cleverness. You wouldn’t want it said that you can’t appreciate a good trick, even at your own expense, would you?”
Clary saw by the narrowing of the Queen’s eyes that she had gambled hard — maybe too hard — on the faerie woman’s pride; but a moment later, the Queen was smiling, and the creatures in the walls shrieked appreciatively. “Tricky like your father,” she said, and Clary felt it like a kick in the stomach. “Very well. What would you like of me in return for the ___? I shall decide if your proposal merits a negotiation.”
Oh dear God, I hope she has the clarity of mind to ask for Jace. Jace forever!!!
